Meet Sailor! This long hair chi mix is 5 years old and under 20 pounds. He would love a patient dog to continue to show him how to dog appropriately. He is thoroughly enjoying the yard he has and we think the freedom it affords is positively contributing to his healing as well so a fenced in yard is a must and no kids. Sailor and Seamus (Seamus has been adopted) were owner surrenders to the HSTB. They called us for help because in their cage, they were absolutely terrified and unable to be touched.
It was readily apparent these boys, though brothers and having lived together their whole lives, weren’t bonded and didn’t need to stay together. Sailor was particularly fearful and growly when uneasy. His foster mom is used to the feisty fearful pups and decided she would love him through the fear, show him he had nothing TO fear, and patiently teach him to trust, play, and love. Sailor is making WONDERFUL strides. He’s learning from the dogs in his home all the manners he wasn’t taught previously. He eats alongside them nicely. He snuggles in bed with them at night. He follows them outside to do his business and he is either at the feet of his foster while she works or he’s snuggled in his crate waiting patiently for her to be done. He gets that the crate is his safe place when he needs a break and willingly naps in there! Yay crate training!! We believe Sailor is at a juncture where he can make the transition to a forever home. He is not perfect – none of us are – but he is far enough down the path to recovery and rehabilitation that a forever home should be able to pick up his training and take him across the finish line.
